Glashütte Original – The Art of the Chronograph, the caliber 37-01 ...

Nov 24, 2014,14:32 PM

… two quite different watches and a dedicated „road show“ to celebrate for good reasons.

The star of the show was obviously the innovative Calibre 37-01 chronograph movement, which was developed from the ground up and made in the firm’s own manufactory. The new automatic movement debuts in two exquisite models at the same time: the elegant Senator Chronograph Panorama Date and the sporty Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date.

Here is just so much to show, to talk about and to appreciate. Therefore I will split it in several parts:

  • The event

  • The movement

  • The watches

and I didn´t even mention THE dial we have to talk about in detail. I am already working on it for quite some time and will post it step-by-step.

The event

I had the pleasure to get an invitation to their “kick-off” event for the road show dedicated to The Art of the Chronograph. It was the 10th of October and it happened to be the second anniversary party for the GO Boutique in Dresden as well. Anymore reasons needed to do the trip? No, but at least one dear person made it even more pleasing and I would like to say “Thanks for everything and your friendship!”. (You know who you are!)

The initial presentation of the chronograph movement and the related watches, in spring at the Baselworld fair, attracted a great deal of attention. At the event in Dresden the new watches made their initial appearances in the firm’s own boutique (and afterwards around the world, to be followed by their step-by-step presentation in the stores of authorised dealers). Thus the guests (customers and friends of the brand) in Dresden were among the first to experience the new chronographs “live”.

Glashütte Original managing director Yann Gamard and Germany’s brand manager Lothar Schlichting opened the show with a word of welcome and an invitation to explore the new chronographs in all their facets and technical particulars.

There were plenty of opportunities to do so: two watchmakers from the manufactory were on hand for live presentations of selected steps in the assembly of the Calibre 37 and other mechanical movements.

A comprehensive amount of chronographs from GO was on display as well and it was a real pleasure to see some rare and collectible beauties again. A feast for the eyes for any WIS.

Can you still remember them all? I guess yes, because when you are reading here you are a Purist smile

Glashütte Original is nothing than short when it comes to interesting chronographs and it is worth to look in more detail.

Of course the novelties have been on display as well, but more on this later.

Interested guests were offered a chance to try their hand at the watchmaker’s craft. I tried as well and didn´t get a job offer for good reasons afterwards. Still some people have been worse than me smile

The technology of the new chronograph movement and the history of chronograph production in Glashütte Original were presented in an interactive exhibition. If you have the chance to attend one exhibition of their road show, don´t hesitate to do so.

One attraction proved especially popular with the guests: a slot-car racetrack featured a track in the form of the typical Glashütte Original “Double-G” logo.

Especially some woman pushed it very hard - believe it or not. As the model cars raced around the track, the individual times, along with that of the evening’s fastest driver, were stopped, precisely and reliably, using (not only, to be very honest smile ) the new chronographs.

Musical accompaniment for the evening was provided by music producer, Echo Prize winner and DJ Sven Helbig, who made his name with numerous international appearances and music projects undertaken with, among others, the Pet Shop Boys. Together with the cellist Konstantin Heidrich and in the following DJ set, Sven presented an unusual mixture of electronic and orchestral music.

This performance, the first-class catering and many interesting discussions made time seem to fly, and so it was already late when a further high point of the evening was announced. The event coincided (as already mentioned above) with the second birthday of the Glashütte Original boutique.

A (tasty!) birthday cake drew great applause upon presentation, and the first pieces were presented to the Dresdner Glashütte Original Boutique team led by boutique manager Sebastian Prinz – in recognition of two very successful years at the Dresden location. Throughout the evening the boutique remained opened to guests, allowing them to discover, along with the new chronographs, other fascinating models in the GO collection.

Once more, even a night was not enough. Thanks to the GO team for the warm welcome in Dresden!

Oliver

is something very interesting and nice. Still it is a different approach and I would not compare the new cal. 37-01 with the cal. 60 from 2000 (?!). The later was shown in the outstanding PanoRetroGraph , which was the flagship of GO if we are talking abo...
