Germany's Glashütte Original makes their New York City stop on the Art of Chronograph Road Show

-- On Wednesday November 12, Glashütte Original hosted a private party to celebrate the New York stop on their Art of Chronograph Road Show. Held at the Sky Room atop the New Museum on Bowery, selected members of the press were allowed gaze at the multiple displays of the German brand’s history while being treated to a break-taking view of the Manhattan skyline during sunset.

The event was hosted in the Sky Room at the New Museum on Bowery

With over 170 years of history, Mr. Dieter Pachner, VP of Sales, and Mr. Steve Cohen, US Brand Manager greeted party attendees and answered all questions of the guests. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Pachner about his history in the industry while enjoying the brisk cold air out on the balcony. “I decided to go into the watch industry as a youngster. I was 13 years old when I told my parents I wanted to be a watchmaker. Everyday is a new challenge and new opportunity, but at the end of the day, I’m really enjoying this industry because it’s an industry where we are proud to produce small handcrafted products of unique timepieces. We are talking about product with a beauty that a lot of people stand behind.”

As the clock struck 6pm, more and more VIP guests arrived to champagne, hors d’oeuvres, and an elaborate toy racetrack. Guests could test the accuracy and reliability of the new chronograph by using the new timepieces to control a slot-car racetrack, specially created for the occasion. In addition, the music performance by the remarkable solo violinist Bryson Andres captivated the crowd with its fusion of classic and contemporary arrangements.

The star of the show however, was the innovative Calibre 37 chronograph movement itself, which was developed from the ground up and made in the firm’s own manufactory. To provide the guests with a deep insight of the new calibre, a young watchmaker from Glashütte was on site doing demonstrations on the several steps of the new caliber’s skillful assembly process. The new automatic movement debuts in two exquisite models: the elegant Senator Chronograph Panorama Date and the sporty Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date. Both lines then feature a well-balanced combination of functions in a column wheel, integrated chronograph mechanism.

Ending the evening, Mr. Pachner shared advice for those new collectors of Glashütte Original and new members of the watch community - “I thinking people who are collecting items, especially watches, should really take pride in why they have the passion and why they have fun. I think that everything that you collect should be fun and that maybe you should focus on one idea, like focusing only on German products, chronographs, or only special limited editions. A collector always has his mission, what he is going for. It only makes sense to collection a product, just like cars, to have fun. I think for me, as a personal recommendation, I say please enjoy it because as long as you can enjoy it, every collection makes sense and if you don’t enjoy it, then please stop, because then it is not a collection, it is an investment and that is a completely other topic.”
