I don’t post often here, but seeing this thread I had to say something.
Thank you for posting this. The simple fact is that the while-life carbon costings show that EVs have a smaller footprint than ICE-powered vehicles.
“But my V8!”, people say. Yes, the ICE is something many here seem to love. Doesn’t mean it’s better, though.
As for where science meets policy - this is important.
It was 2006 when I first really happened across all this climate change stuff. I was a skeptic. Ok maybe there’s global warming but is it such a big deal?, I remember thinking. Ugh, these environmentalists, such green drips. Etc. But then I was assigned by my boss to manage a consulting project on climate change risks for a major global city. Doing the research - for a document which would go for a lot of scrutiny - was a heck of a wake up call for me.
Why we need policy is to enable and drive a quicker transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon future. Well, there is now plenty of science to inform it. And the science is clear: the planet is heating; the planet will be fine, but we and many other species will not; and we have to act now (in fact we need to have acted more, years ago, but here we are).
Best
