My Two Cents

Hi Will,

I recently bought two Glashutte's:  Sport Evolution Chrono (silver dial w/metal bracelet) and Senator Automatic (stainless steel w/no complications).  The initial impulse buy was the Sport Evolution.  But thus far I find I'm wearing the Senator more -- it's utter simplicity strikes me as beautiful.

Of relevance to you is that the Sport Evo has the Caliber 39 movement and the Senator has the Caliber 100 movement.  Since these purchases involved my writing a five figure check, I did quite a bit of research beforehand (though I warn you, I am not an expert on horology -- I'm probably in the bottom 10% of watch-knowledge among the people who are registered on this site).

The sense I got is that the Caliber 100 movement, which I beleive was only released to the public in the past year or two, is being phased-in slowly by GO.  I believe that it first showed up in the Senator and Navigator.  It has been engineered for complications but the 39 is still a mainstay on some models w/complications (e.g., the Sport Evo Chrono).  Query whether the more "rough-and-tumble" nature of the prospective use of a Sport Evo was the reason why the 39 was used for it (GO may have done this because they have a very high confidence level in the 39's durabiity whereas they want to see the track record on the 100 before they commit to it in more sporting models....this is just speculatin on my part).  Another inference I drew when doing my research is that GO may not be in such a hurry to phase out the 39 because, well...it's really a terrific piece of work.

I'm happy I got the Senator as my "daily business watch", partly because of its beauty and partly because it has the Caliber 100 movement (you know the feeling....wouldn't you have hated to get the 3-Series BMW just befoe a major model overhaul that you didn't know about?).  In my head, the Senator more-or-less rounds-out and perfectly complements my purchase of the Caliber 39 Sport Evo Chrono.  But quality-wise, I don't think you'll ever notice any difference between the two unless you are an expert watchmaker.  Both movements are equally beautiful when examined through the display-backs.

Hope that helps.

DB

I was on vacation last week and walked into a store with my wife and daughter. I thought I would do a little window shopping for an everyday watch and if I saw something I liked I might buy it. I was only somewhat familiar with GO and had never seen their...

I emailed Glashutte
