The most beautiful Glashütte UNIONs - that were never built

Jan 16, 2014,14:25 PM

Once upon a time, GO's little sister brand, Union Glashütte, was very popular among the PuristS, in spite of the fact that they were offered for sale only in Germany and Austria. Due to the fact that they were "real" Glashütte watches, with movements made in Glashütte, but at a very competitive price, they were highly regarded as the first step into a real affection for GO timepieces. Unfortunately, the company's decision to discontinue the employment of Glashütte movements and to use standard ETA movements instead, immediately removed the Union brand from our radar; it also completely erased its presence in our fora.

While searching for a specific picture in my photographic archive, I coincidentally found a few photographs I made in Munich exactly ten years ago, in 2004. Dr. Frank Müller, then CEO of GO (and Union) showed me the prototypes of two beautiful hand-wound watches from the Bergter series, but in 18k pink gold cases, with hands made from gold, too. One was a time-only watch with small second, the other had a power reserve and a mooonphase indication. I was completely stunned by beauty of these watches. Unfortunately, the golden series was never realized.

IN the years following, I have often inquired about the fate of these prototypes, but nobody knew anything (or possibly only pretended not to know any details).

Here are the pictures of the watches that never had the chance to be offered to enthusiasts:

Such a shame. This post makes me feel bad. The time only small seconds watch is simply stunning. Both watches would no doubt have been hugely popular. Nothing more to say. A simple waste. Dean

I have to agree with their decision. Yes they do look lovely. But ultimately dueling GOs have not have been fruitful for the company's success.

I fully agree, but ...

... generally, I think that the whole Union issue was problematic from the very beginning, ever since Heinz Pfeiffer launched the brand. There was never a clear positioning of the Union brand. On second thought, I consider this a problem for the whole Gla...

You and I have "chatted" about that in years past...

I truly miss the UG Diplomat series, as well as the entire range. The above pictured rose gold piece with power reserve, moonphase and seconds was offered in a LE edition of 100 pieces and I thought was one of best watches for the money, for getting into ...

He left the SwatchGroup in 2004, but had transferred control to Dr. Müller at least a year earlier. At Basel 2003, he popped up during Dr. Müller's presentation of the novelties, much to the latter's joy: :) Marcus ...
