Quick thoughts about an admirable watch: The Senator Rattrapante

Last week, I had the opportunity to see and admire another great Chrono, one of those you / we never think about when we speak about prestigious pieces...The Senator Rattrapante! This is true, we always speak of the PP 5070, the Chrono Malte from Vacheron, the JLC Duo Metre A Chronographe or, of course, of the Lange Datograph...And never, or quite never, of this GO!This is not fair, as this Chrono is a beautiful example of the sense of the finish of the German Watchmaking...First, a gorgeous, not to...

Dr No visits Glashütte to commemorate the opening of the German Watch Museum on May 22nd

. . . last week at the invitation of Frank Müller to commemorate the opening of the German Watch Museum on May 22nd and the attendant SAECULUM Glashütte Original Music Festival Award ceremony on the 23rd. Remember Brando's great line from 'The Godfather'? "Make them an offer they can't refuse." Well, there was no way I could turn down this invitation, so I marched into my boss's office and asked him for permission to take two weeks off during our busiest season, which he promptly (and surprisingl...

GO Fish: Glashuette Original with Singapore Friends

Our hosts were Dr Frank Muller and David Ponzo of SWATCH Group. The location was Long Beach (Seafood) Restaurant @ Dempsey; the former British Army camp. The guests were watch-friends of Glashuette Original:   Customers, Moderators from three horology websites and Journalists from TimeWerke magazine in Singapore. There was little notice: got a telephone call on Friday afternoon saying Dr Muller was in town and we all turned up the next evening. It had been a sweltering, tropical d...

A few pics and my initial impressions of the Karree Panodate . . .

A few pics and my intial impression of the Karree Panodate that I just acquired. I've long been a fan of G O's prior generation of Karrees and Senators, having purchased four of the former and two of the latter . . . The current generations were introduced in 2005 (Senator) and 2006 (Karree), and were slightly larger, more polished and embellished, and more refined than the models they replaced. While they were well received, my preferences leaned towards the taut aesthetics of the prior generation....

One of Glashütte Original's most important assets . . .

. . . is their  service department, which is essential for those of us who hold onto our watches for the long-term.  I was crestfallen last July when my first Karree perpetual seized up after over three years of continuous operation [note to John: I got your message - no more winders!], and had to send my favorite G O back home for rehabilitation.  I asked my colleague at G O if they would consider taking photos during the overhaul so that we could all see the process, and René was happy...

GO novelties '06, pt. 6: Regulator Tourbillon Basel 2006

"In the flesh." GO novelties '06, pt. 6: Regulator Tourbillon Date: Apr 12, 2006,06:06 AM -   (view entire thread) This piece certainly was the highlight of this year's series of GO novelties. there is barely anything to add to the press release published in out News Central, other than that it is breathtaking in reality. This watch is extremely difficult to capture appropriately in pictures. Especially the black-in-black stripe pattern, that is such an important design feature on ...

GO novelties '06, pt. 5: PanoMatics, PanoMatics Basel 2006

"In the flesh". GO novelties '06, pt. 5: PanoMatics, PanoMatics ... The gorgeous PanoMatic series received a new complication, and a very peculiar anniversary edition in a nice little box. First, the PanoMaticVenue now offers an easy-to-use second timezone. Pushers on the case's left side allow the main hour hand to be set forward or backward in hourly increments, as we know it from PP and UN. Thus the watch can be easily adapted to a new local time zone when travelling; or to the daylight sav...

GO novelties '06, pt. 4: Navigators Basel 2006

"In the flesh". GO novelties '06, pt. 4: Navigators Date: Apr 06, 2006,01:01 AM -   (view entire thread) One the most vigorously expected novelties of this year's GO Basel lineup were the new Navigator watches. While Glash?tte Original is not primarily known for its pilot watches, which also are in a different price and quality range of all the inexpensive pilot watches on the market, the "Navigators" proved to enjoy steady popularity among the GO fans. Their high quality and marvelous move...

GO novelties '06, pt. 3: Karree series Basel 2006

"In the flesh". GO novelties '06, pt. 3: Karree series Date: Apr 05, 2006,07:07 AM -   (view entire thread) The Karree always was a very distinct shape in the Glash?tte Original catalogue. In the last years, though, it seemed that it became a stepchild, with barely a new model being presented. This changed radically this year, when GO reintroduced a completely new Karree line, in a changed case. The new case has slightly curved sides, and thus appears a bit less strong, rigid, or masculine ...

GO novelties '06, pt. 2: 'Pure' Senators Basel 2006

"In the flesh". GO novelties '06, pt. 2: 'Pure' Senators Date: Apr 04, 2006,08:08 AM -   (view entire thread) When the new Senator series was presented last year, several comments were made about the finely stamped guilloche structure of the dials. It compromises the clean design of the watch, it was said. This year, these critics have no base any more, since for them, GO is offering a plain dial, at first for the Senator Perpetual and the Senator Panorama (also the new complete calendar an...

GO '06 novelties, pt. 1: Senator calendar week Basel 2006

"In the flesh". GO '06 novelties, pt. 1: Senator calendar week Date: Apr 04, 2006,08:08 AM -   (view entire thread) For me, the GO Senator "calendar week" was one of the few truly innovative watches shown on the Basel fair, even if it was not presented with a big event. Outside of Europe, the calendar week is not important, the more so in German-speaking coutnries, though. Over here, all trade business, project planning etc. is done with calendar weeks only. If you order something, you'll g...

Senator Navigator Perpetual - the ultimate tool watch . . .

The Navigator Perpetual - Photos Date: Feb 21, 2007,07:07 AM -   (view entire thread) While I was at a local Authorised Dealer photographing some new watches that just arrived in Singapore, Tim Teo had his GO Nav Perpet on his wrist. I did a few quick snaps which I later discovered that it turned out grainy due to wrong ISO setting. Nevertheless, after a bit of tweaking with Photoshop and converting the images mostly to B&W I thought the images can still be shared with the afficinados here....

Basel 2005 - new Senator cal 100

GO ?Senator? series, presented in Basel 2005 About four years ago, Heinz W. Pfeifer, then president of Glash?tte Original, mentioned a new automatic movement, designated cal. 100, to be in development. Of course, this stirred some unrest among the fans of the brand, and many hesitated to purchase a watch with a movement that seemingly would be replaced within some months or so.However, the years passed by, and the cal. 100 remained unseen. We knew it would eventually come and replace the traditio...
