A brief look at the harmonised Master Geographic...

Apr 23, 2006,04:04 AM

The Geographique using Calibre 929 with 24 time zones, power reserve watch was first introduced in 1990. The patented selection-crown mechanism was fitted to the Master Geographic in 1996 which enabled the wearer to simply turn the crown to drive the corresponding city disc.

(The Pink Gold harmonised Master Geographic)

The existing Master Geographic is a useful and user-friendly simple complication with date and power reserve which has proven itself in its reliability, sturdiness, precision and value. the 2006 Master Geographic gave it a frest contemporary look with the following changes:

(1) It is now 40mm in diameter, still a little too small for my taste but should please the conservative die hard classic fan. Overall much better looking, although the new Master World Geographic is my preferred aesthetic choice now.

(2) There is now two Day/Night indicators, one for the local time at 2 o'clock and another for the reference time at around 7 o'clock with 24 hour indicator.

(The Local Day/Night Indicator)

(The reference Day/Night Indicator)

(3) Summer time is now clearly marked, linked to its respective city in blue letter "S".

(4) An international Date Line indicator in the city disc (not always visible)

(5) Applied gold numerals and hour-markers,. The characteristic Master numerals (3, 9 & 12) now appear on the BEZEL RING.

(6) Red colour for the reference city marker, end of the power reserve, privileged time zone pointer and the end of month date "31"

(The Stainless Steel harmonised Master Geographic)

For the last 10 years, Master Geographic continues to be the bread and butter top seller of the Master Range and has been one of the strongest non-novelty model for the Manufacture.

2006 is the year when Master Geographic is first restyled (what JLC termed internally as harmonisation), it also marks the completion of the quiet 100% transformation process to autotractorised (autotractor is also an internal JLC term) movements across the product range. (For previous discussions on autotractor in 2004, see http://www.network54.com/Forum/234648/message/1078680164/In+search+of+the+perfect+movement%2C+Autotractor+first+used+in+Home+Time+and+Dualmatic%21 )

I haven't done the analysis yet, but I would bet that the revised hand positions follow the Golden Ratio. It feels remarkably like the RDM dial. Hasn't got the WOW factor of the 5130esque World but probably all the better for it IMHO. I'd really like to s...

Comparison

Hmmmm, Why is the World Geo dial rotated?

By: Velociphile - No longer in the building : April 23rd, 2006-06:06
Is there a technical reason or is it just aesthetic? Let me guess, Magsy did the World and Janek the Geo? LOL Velociphile

And compare with outgoing Geo model

Thanks Jaw for the update

Nice harmonisation, with the least intrusive PR 'fan' of the Master range. Think I prefer the non-zero single digit dates on the date subdial like on the Master World. With the auto-tractor movement, I wonder why is the Power Reserve still only 43h? Thank...

Hmm, harmonised... Digitally overstreched Times Roman numerals...

...instead of the nice old ones, matched to the logo... Typography on JLC dials is poor nowadays...

Relax.....

I agree, it is not about 'Relaxing', if everything relaxed, it would be a swatch. It is a shame to see those beautiful numerals and their thoughtful forms replaced with a typeface now considered bogstandard and overused since the advent of Microsoft Word ...

sigh...

We had all kinds of polices, and now a new type of profession, the typography and font police. For all straight-jacket type typography expert, suggested reading subject - David Carson... Jaw

This is a "Jaeger-LeCoultre Discussion Forum" where "Comments expressed politely are always welcome" and should not be greeted with sighs, surely?

 By: Iori : April 23rd, 2006-11:11
Just to clarify my statement, I am speaking not as a typographer or designer but as an admirer of JLC products. We were all drawn to JLC over other marques for a reason and for many of us it was the classic, understated aesthetics that issue from the manu...

Good News

 By: Reverso : April 23rd, 2006-10:10
That JLC continues the "Bread-and-Butter" Complication (which I really like). Also good news for me that the harmonised version does not look as good as the original one (which I possess). To say, that 40mm is a concession to the die-hard small size fans ...

I really like that, thanks Jaw. nt

harmonisation?

 By: HerrK : April 24th, 2006-04:04
I assume that harmonisation does not refer to the watch itself but to the Master range thus simply meaning that the Geo is more looking like the others - which it now does. But I always liked the Geo for its look, especially the pr-indicator pointing to t...

So far...

 By: Jaw : April 24th, 2006-04:04
harmonised products sell better.. But thanks for sharing your opinions on the matter. Jaw

I have to admit ...

 By: HerrK : April 24th, 2006-06:06
that selling products is what they are made for. Hope this is true for the new Master Geo. The watch certainly deserves it regardless of my personal and probably oldfashioned point of view.

Geo

 By: Reverso : April 25th, 2006-10:10
I have assumed the Geo is already a top seller. I actually see the watch very often with my colleagues, when I read an article about the watches of CEOs in a German business magazine, two of the 10 reported had a Master Geo etc etc. But who knows, maybe t...

JLC does not release such information

 By: Jaw : April 25th, 2006-08:20
...but from non-JLC industry sources, harmonised JLC watch sales spurts were obvious. and the increase in sales after each facelift is significant (term I used is intentionally understated) in some cases, exceedingly so - e.g Reverso Duetto. And based on ...

I can assert that ...

3-9-12 look awkward to me too...

Finally! Thank you, Jaw!

thank you JAW

The real test is viewing the existing and the harmonised version

 By: Jaw : April 24th, 2006-04:16
of Master Geographic side by side, and in the flesh... Personally, I have little doubt which one most will prefer. But of course, aesthetic is a subjective matter - So the right thing to do for those with strong positive or negative opinions are to pick y...

By way of comparison

If one compares the Maserati GT3200 with the GT4200, the 4200 is the better car, the engine is more reliable and true Ferrari technique. However, the GT4200 has rearlights of a Skoda. If you compare prices of used cars, you actually find that the GT3200 d...
